MATTER LIFECYCLE

Manage the transition as carefully as the matter.

Support internal reassignment, organisation transfer, external handoff, closure, and reopening through defined processes. Keep responsibility and access aligned with the matter’s status.

Working, handoff and archive folders arranged as a deliberate sequence on a desk.

Different transitions need different treatment.

Changing ownership, moving work externally, and closing a matter are distinct events. LitDesk includes dedicated lifecycle processes rather than treating every transition as a simple status label.

Internal reassignment

Change responsibility within the organisation.

Organisation transfer

Handle movement between organisations through the relevant process.

External handoff

Support a defined handoff outside the organisation.

Closure and reopening

Manage the end of active work and a subsequent return to it.

Review the record, responsibility, and access.

Identify the appropriate transition, review the working record and responsibilities, and complete the relevant process. Treat party access as an explicit part of the transition rather than allowing old grants to return automatically.

Completed closure, transfer, or external handoff ends ordinary party access. Closure may provide a separately granted download of one uploaded verdict version.

Questions about matter transfer & closure.

Does reopening restore previous party access?

No. Reopening must not automatically reactivate previous access grants.

Can a party receive the verdict after closure?

Closure may include a separate, explicitly granted download of one uploaded verdict version. This does not restore ordinary access to the case workspace.
